This book is an aspiration to reconstruct the twentieth century art of Vilnius, to cast a new light on its character and functioning in the society of that time. It is not easy to do that because several nations have different visions and auras about the city's past. For Lithuanians it is the symbol of their self-dependence, the city of grand dukes, lost and dreamed capital; for Poles it is the cradle of one of their nicest cultural epoch's, Romanticism; for Jews it is Lithuanian Jerusalem. The phenomena of the art of Vilnius are analyzed in the context of the art of Europe of that time, close relations with the processes of the Western art are accentuated, the appearance of new trends, Modernism, Aestheticism and Symbolism and first artistic steps of the Avant-garde. The art of that time is presented as dynamic heritage, the period of the openness to various cultural values. This monograph is based on abundant material which was never published before, photographs and the reproductions of the works of art.

Laimonas Briedis is a cultural geographer with proficiency in history, which makes him a peculiar reader of the local past. Briedis was born and raised in Vilnius during Soviet times and spent much of his childhood scouring its streets and hidden places, sniffing out the secrets of its history. Early on he spotted and was intrigued by the multitude of ethnic histories inscribed (some openly and some submerged) on the Vilnius cityscape. He began his higher education at the University of Vilnius but completed it in Canada as an immigrant. His received his doctoral degree in human geography at the University of British Columbia and conducted his post-doctoral research at the history department of the University of Toronto. His appetite for travel, maps and history is more or less insatiable, but when not in motion, he makes his home in Vilnius, Lithuania and Vancouver, Canada.
